What We’ve Learned Again After Ten Years—and Why It Affects Everyone
When was the last time you took a first-aid course? Let’s be honest: For some of us, it was just two years ago; for others, it’s been over ten years. That’s why it was all the more exciting to see how first aid has evolved during that time.
Matthias, Kati, and Eileen set aside a whole day to brush up on their first aid skills. It quickly became clear that, just like riding a bike or swimming, the most important steps stick in your memory; still, after a long break, you feel much more confident when you practice the procedures again hands-on. We were particularly surprised by how many procedures have become simpler, easier to understand, and even more efficient today thanks to digital support.
The course was led by an instructor who is only 19 years old and is currently completing his voluntary social service year with the Malteser. What might have seemed surprising at first quickly turned out to be a real highlight of the day. With a wealth of expertise, a relaxed demeanor, and impressive confidence, he guided the entire group through the various topics. Theory, group work, and practical exercises alternated at just the right pace, keeping everyone’s attention high throughout the day and ensuring the course was anything but dry.

From CPR to emergency apps
Of course, the focus was on classic first-aid measures: the recovery position, chest compressions, the use of a defibrillator, and the proper response to poisoning, allergic reactions, or foreign objects in the eye. But we also found the digital developments particularly exciting. Today, modern emergency apps, automated processes, and interfaces in all our smartphones help us respond more quickly and in a more structured manner in an emergency.
Anyone who knows us knows this: We rarely go a day without coming up with new ideas 😉 Even during the course, there were numerous discussions about how digital processes, apps, and applications in the field of first aid could be made even smarter, simpler, and more reliable in the future. We see great potential here, especially in collaboration with aid organizations and associations, to further develop digital solutions in a meaningful way.

Team Building with Real Added Value
In addition to many new insights, there was another nice side effect: The course was almost like a mini team-building event. While collaboration, communication, and mutual support are part of our everyday routine—usually, however, amid projects, meetings, and clients—this time we were able to demonstrate precisely these strengths in a completely different situation. This not only refreshed our knowledge but also boosted our team spirit.
First aid isn’t something you learn once and then master forever. Regular refresher courses provide confidence, help overcome hesitation, and at the same time show how modern technologies can help you respond even faster and more effectively in an emergency. And maybe today is exactly the right time to ask yourself: How long has it actually been since your last first aid course?
