Corporations plan for AI. Family-owned businesses just do it.
When people talk about artificial intelligence, a certain image quickly comes to mind: large corporations with massive IT departments, substantial innovation budgets, and dedicated AI teams are setting the pace. However, our experience at 2be often shows something different: family-owned businesses and small and medium-sized enterprises, in particular, have a decisive advantage when it comes to AI—short decision-making paths.
Whereas in large organizations, specialized departments, IT, data protection, procurement, and various decision-making levels must first be brought on board, in a family business the key decision-makers are often seated right at the same table. An idea on Monday. An initial test on Wednesday. A decision on Friday.
Of course, things don’t always move quite that fast. 😉 But it’s exactly this mindset that can become a real competitive advantage when implementing AI.
Why Family-Owned Businesses Can Pick Up the Pace with AI
- Decisions are made more quickly: Short decision-making processes make it possible to test new tools on a small scale first, rather than spending months discussing theoretical scenarios.
- The benefits come before the hype: Many small and medium-sized businesses aren’t interested in using AI just because it’s the trendy thing to do right now. What really matters is a much more down-to-earth question: What concrete benefits does it offer us? For example, can AI reduce routine tasks? Support sales? Prepare quotes faster? Make knowledge more accessible within the company? Document meetings or streamline processes?
- Family-owned businesses think long-term: Owner-managed companies, in particular, often plan beyond the next quarter. Investments should continue to drive the company forward even five, ten, or twenty years from now. AI is therefore not just a short-term trend, but a potential building block for the company’s long-term development.
Nevertheless, it’s important to remember that AI isn’t a sure thing; existing processes must be scrutinized, and employees must understand why new tools are being introduced and how they can use them. Data protection, responsibilities, and quality must be clearly defined. Not everything that’s possible with AI is automatically worthwhile.
That’s why, when it comes to AI projects, we prefer not to start by asking, “What AI should we buy?” but rather a completely different question:“What problem do we actually want to solve?”
After all, the most exciting AI projects rarely start with software or a tool. They begin with a very specific challenge from day-to-day business operations. In our view, this is precisely where a major opportunity lies for small and medium-sized businesses: In the age of AI, company size alone is not a competitive advantage. Speed, courage, and a willingness to learn can be far more important.
Or, to put it in typical 2be style: Don’t just talk about AI forever. Try it out. Learn. Do better. 🙂
